Work to begin on A259/West Street junction next week
As part the redevelopment of Shelter Hall, work will begin next week to make the A259 Kings Road/West Street junction safer for cyclists and pedestrians and improve traffic flow for motorists.
The junction, which is usually used by 36,000 vehicles, 30,000 pedestrians and 2,500 cyclists every day, is a key link between Brighton railway station and the seafront.
While the number of vehicles on our roads has significantly reduced due to coronavirus (Covid-19) movement restrictions, doing the work now will minimise disruption to motorists and local businesses.
When the work is complete, it will mean:
- dedicated crossing phases for cyclists between West Street and the seafront cycle path
- a right turn ban for motor vehicles from West Street onto the A259 Kings Road, improving traffic flow
- segregated access for all road users
Work will start on Monday 27 April and take approximately three months to complete. Motorists making essential journeys are being advised to use alternative routes if possible.
During the work
- southbound access to the A259 Kings Road from West Street will be closed and motor vehicles will be diverted via Russell Road to access the A259.
- The eastbound A259 Kings Road will be reduced to one lane leading up to the junction
- The westbound A259 Kings Road will be reduced to one lane
Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, Councillor Anne Pissaridou said: “I’m sorry that we’re having to do these works, but with fewer vehicles on the roads at the moment, it’s an opportunity to minimise disruption to motorists and businesses in the area.
“These works are vital to the completion of Shelter Hall, an excellent redevelopment project that will have a lasting, positive impact on our seafront and the city as a whole.
“There are many long-term benefits to improving this junction, including making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, and improving traffic flow for vehicles.”
Contractors on site are undertaking daily risk assessments and talking steps to reduce spread of Covid-19. All are following guidance on social distancing and hygiene. Non-site staff are working from home.
