Brighton & Hove City Council has successfully secured funding to continue its work promoting sustainable travel in the city.
The council’s Access Travel team has been awarded £495,000 from the Department for Transport (DfT) to build on the three years’ of projects which have been supporting residents, employers and visitors to travel sustainably and safely. In the last three years the team have:
- Developed hundreds of Personal Travel Plans and offered other support for job seekers and those on low incomes.
- Helped businesses, universities, hospitals and their employees to increase active and sustainable travel for work through events and site travel plans and improvements
- Worked with nurseries and schools to increase walking, cycling and increase public transport use and develop and update their Travel Plans
- Delivered cycling events and created training opportunities for thousands of school children through the Sustrans ‘Bike it’ officers
- Supported and promoted the city’s award-winning Bikeshare Scheme
- Delivered a number of road safety campaigns focussing on pedestrian and cyclist safety
- Provided cycle and maintenance training to hundreds of city residents
The new funding will mean the Access Travel team can continue with existing projects and will focus on North and South Portslade in 2020/21. It will also be used to support events such as Clean Air Day on 18 June and Car Free Day on 22 September.
Building on council successes
Chair of the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee, Anne Pissaridou said: “I am pleased the Access Travel team has been given the funding to continue its good work to promote sustainable transport around the city.
“We have declared a climate emergency and we are determined to be a carbon neutral council by 2030. To achieve that goal, we need as many residents, visitors and businesses as possible to travel in a way that is sustainable and reduces carbon emissions.
“The work that has already been done to support them is very encouraging and this funding will allow us to build on the successes we have had so far.”
