Council united in opposing the Italian far right party La Lega
The leaders of the three political groups on Brighton & Hove City Council have today collectively spoken out against a dinner scheduled to take place in Brighton this weekend for supporters of extreme-right nationalist Matteo Salvini and his La Lega party.
Councillor Nancy Platts Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council and Labour Group Leader, Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, Convenor of the Green Group and Councillor Steve Bell Leader of the Conservative Group have issued the following collective statement.
“La Lega is not welcome in our city. We are a City of Sanctuary, we are proud of our diversity.
“Politics and beliefs based on hatred and division have no place here.
“We repeat again our commitment to unity. We stand together; strong in compassion with people from all cultures, ethnicities, religions and races.
“Division and hatred drives people into the ranks of those trying to recruit support to their bigoted beliefs. We will not let this happen."
