Brighton & Hove residents can save money on energy bills this winter by switching their supplier.
A new energy tariff from local council-backed supplier Your Energy Sussex offers customers price protection for two winters on gas and electricity.
Your Energy Sussex is a partnership between Sussex councils and Robin Hood Energy, the licensed energy company owned and operated by Nottingham City Council.
It was launched by West Sussex County Council in February 2018 and is supported by 12 local authorities, including East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council.
Comparing suppliers saves money
Only 25% of households compared their energy costs and switched supplier in the past year.
Many people have never switched suppliers and – if on their energy supplier’s most expensive ‘standard variable’ tariff – could be paying up to £300 more than they need to each year.
Your Energy Sussex say their customers get a competitive price, excellent customer service, 100% renewable electricity and the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping the local community.
This is because Your Energy Sussex is run on a not-for-profit basis. Any surplus after costs have been met is being used to build a fund to support local people who are in fuel poverty.
The renewable electricity supplied to customers is certified as being sourced from UK-based wind and solar generators.
Helping tackle fuel poverty
Councillor John Allcock, chair of Brighton & Hove City Council’s Housing Committee, said: “Our latest estimates show that there are more than 15,000 households in the city in fuel poverty.
“By switching to Your Energy Sussex, with competitive energy bills, carbon reduction through 100% renewable energy, and help for local people struggling to pay their energy bills, everyone can win.”
Councillor Siriol Hugh-Jones, the opposition lead for housing sustainability, said: “The council is committed to our city becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
“Housing is crucial to this. A council-backed supplier offering a combination of 100% renewable energy, help for local people in fuel poverty and competitive tariffs is clearly a step in the right direction.”
