The main events in the city’s seventh Trans Pride take place this Saturday (20 July).
The day begins with a protest march starting from the Marlborough Pub & Theatre in Prince’s Street at 12 noon, followed by an programme of events in Brunswick Square Gardens running from 1pm to 6pm.
Members of the council’s LGBTQ Workers Forum will be taking part in the march to show solidarity with Trans & Non-Binary communities in the city and council colleagues.
About Trans Pride
Trans Pride has been running in Brighton & Hove since 2013, and is the biggest event of its kind in Europe.
The event seeks to show the Trans & Non-Binary community in all its joyous glory and celebrate transgender people as artists, musicians, writers, performers, as well as trans people as everyday people just getting on with their lives.
It is run by a grass-roots, community-led organisation staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers.
Transgender rights have continued to have a huge amount of visibility in the last year. Unfortunately, some of this has been negative and often damagingly misleading.

An event to be proud of
Councillor Amanda Grimshaw, the council’s lead member for equalities, said: “From personal experience, I know there is still a lot of work to be done on equality and inclusion issues for Trans & Non-Binary people.
“We are fully committed to supporting Trans & Non-Binary community groups in the city and it’s an area I am really passionate about.
“I have a close friend who is Trans and, from my time at Brighton Museum, I saw the incredible impact the Museum of Transology exhibition had on 100s of visitors.
“There is still too much prejudice and a small minority of people promoting anti-trans agenda and misinformation about support organisations across the city.
“Trans Pride is a crucial way to raise awareness of the issues Trans & Non-Binary people face and a fantastic way to show our support. My friend tells me it’s the one day she is looked at for all the right reasons.
“I am also delighted to welcome Trans & Non-Binary visitors from across the country coming to join in Brighton & Hove’s Trans Pride events and celebrations.”

However you choose to mark or celebrate Trans Pride this year, we wish everyone a safe, enjoyable and memorable time.
We will have stalls at Brunswick Square, so come along and say hello to some of our staff teams.
Staff from our Safer Communities Team will be there, alongside other council teams talking about the services they provide, including Trans Inclusive sport, fostering, education, community safety, library services and employment opportunities.

Our trans and non-binary inclusive approach
We’re proud of being a diverse city, and the council is committed to equality and inclusion for all people including our Trans & Non-Binary residents.
The city’s Trans Needs Assessment and Trans Equality Scrutiny group which identified the Trans & Non-Binary community as a vulnerable group and highlighted the need to remove the stigma and build relationships.
We are aware of an ongoing interest in our Trans & Non-Binary inclusive approach. We know from a range of evidence that gender is more complicated than is traditionally recognised.
Our equality and inclusion strategy rightly supports those who are experiencing greatest disadvantage. We will work together to advance equality and inclusion for Trans & Non-Binary communities. We aim to do this in partnership with national and local organisations and communities.
