Councillors have approved three houses and a two-storey office building on a vacant plot on Upper Gardner Street.
The site is a narrow area that lies between an existing warehouse and terraced houses and the proposal is to build new houses in the northern part of the site and extend the existing building for office space. There will also be a new two-storey bridge building for office use fronting Upper Gardner Street.
Part of the boundary wall that supported the roof over the warehouse has partially collapsed and most of the roof has had to be removed.
For this reason it would be expensive to reinstate the building as a warehouse - currently used for temporary storage of building materials - and would have more value and benefit as good quality smaller office space for which there is a shortage in central Brighton.
Homes and jobs
Councillor Tracey Hill, chair of the city’s planning committee, said: “This is a good use of a small vacant site in the heart of the city and will provide homes as well as much-needed work space and an increase of 12 full-time jobs.
“It is an amended scheme which has allowed for a much better proposal to be put forward. The new homes will have plots that are slightly larger than those nearby and create more outdoor space for those who will be living there.”
The wall to the east part of site will also be made good.
