Councillors touring all city’s schools

A team of Brighton & Hove councillors from the new administration elected in May is visiting every state school in the city over the next 12 months.

Les Hamilton, Nick Childs, Kate Knight and Gary Wilkinson sit on the council’s children, young people and skills committee.

Councillor Childs, who chairs the committee, said: “Between the four of us we will be hearing first-hand what the key issues facing our schools are – and exploring what practical steps we can take to support them.

“Brighton & Hove’s schools are doing a fantastic job – outperforming the national average on many levels despite appalling government funding cuts.

“We will also be underlining our wish to continue the city's very successful ‘family of schools’ approach - which sees schools collaborating with each other as well as with the council’s education team.”

Kate Williams, headteacher of Longhill High School, met Councillor Childs on one of his first school visits.

Miss Williams said: “Spending time in schools is an excellent way for councillors to see the great work being done across the city.

“We’re proud to be one of the first schools to welcome his new team.”
