Celebrate the noise - Make Music Day at Jubilee and Hove Libraries
Jubilee and Hove Libraries are playing host to a programme of community music events on Friday 21 June to celebrate Make Music Day.
Make Music Day is the world’s largest annual music festival with free events in more than 800 cities across 120 countries.
Come along to enjoy and take part in performances, workshops, taster sessions and music talk. The events include performers of all ages and abilities.
Jubilee Library programme
Morning
- 10-11.15am - Singing Workshop with Aneesa Chaudhry and members of the Martlets ‘Good Vibrations’ community choir in in conference room 3. Join in to learn songs to perform at 11:30!
- 10.15-10.45am - Baby Boogie drop-in music session for pre-school children and parents, with Ian in the children’s area.
- 11-11.30am - Ukulele for Beginners with Ian in the community space. An introduction to this fun and easy-to-learn instrument - you will be playing songs by the end of the session! Ukuleles provided.
- 11.30am-12 noon - Martlets ‘Good Vibrations’ Choir with children of Queen’s Park Primary School in the main hall.
Afternoon
- 12 noon-12.15pm - Singer-songwriter Giulia Pedrana performing in the community space.
- 12.15-12.45pm - New Note Strummers guitar group performing in the main hall. A supportive guitar group, open to anyone in recovery from addiction of all abilities, who cover well known songs and encourage players to compose their own music. Bring your guitar along if you’d like to join in for a jam at the end!
- 12.45-1pm - Singer-songwriter Lauren Alex Hooper performing in the community space.
- 1-1.30pm - Silver Strings performing in the main hall. Brighton & Hove’s very own late-starter string band, led by Bela Emerson. Most players were complete beginners to music-making before their first session. The band plays a mixture of popular music, folk, and classical themes as well as some original material.
- 1.30-1.45pm - Buckingham Park Primary School Ukulele Club performing in the community space. Children aged between 8 and 11 attending a weekly ukulele club perform numbers and invite you to sing with along.
- 1.45-2.15pm - Jampots singing group performing songs from the 1850s to the 1980s! Led by Andy Miller, the Jampots is made up of residents and friends of Lavender House Senior Housing Scheme.
- 2.30-3pm - Fretful Federation mandolin orchestra performing in the main hall. This Brighton-based award-winning community music group are formed of players from all over Sussex and beyond. They welcome new members, from novice to expert.
- 3-3.30pm - Tight Squeeze Ceilidh Band performing in the community space. Brighton-based ceilidh and barn dance band. Lively jigs, reels and polkas from these islands and beyond, played on fiddle, banjo and squeeze boxes.
- 3.30-4pm - Silver Sounds Samba performing in the main hall. A community-based band for people aged 50+ setting out to challenge the stereotype and celebrate what older people can do. The band meets weekly and performs at many community and charity events.
- 4-4.50pm - Jubilee Music Club Talk: Brighton Punk Special with members of The Piranhas, Peter & The Test Tube Babies and Fish Bros in conference room 3.
- 4.10-4.45pm - Jam Tarts Choir performing in the main hall. A Brighton-based indie choral collective who perform unique and shimmering arrangements of indie, post-punk, electro, Britpop and artrock classics. Joined by a piano, cello, percussion and two trumpets, the library will be anything but quiet!
- 4.45-4.50pm - Finale performance of ‘Bring Me Sunshine’. Join in a mass rendition of this joyful classic with your voice or even an instrument! Instrument notation and chords can be found on the Make Music Day website.
Hove Library programme
Morning
- 10.30-11.30am - Howl singing group drop-in workshop in the children’s library. Howl is an informal, daytime, drop in choir for adults. Pre-school little howlers very welcome too.
- 11.45-12.05pm - Singer-songwriter Charlotte Oliver performing in the community space.
Afternoon
- 12.15-12.35pm - Singer-songwriter Darren Saunders performing in the community space.
- 12.45-1:05pm - Singer-songwriter David Camilli performing in the community space.
- 1.45-2.15pm - Sing-along with Simon Tilbury in the community space. Come along and join in!
- 2.30-2.50pm - Singer-songwriter Sofia Edevane performing in the community space.
- 3-4pm - Brighton & Hove Classical Guitar Group performing in the community space. The group play arrangements of music from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical & Romantic periods as well as music written in the 20th & 21st century - new members welcome. Guitarists with some experience are invited to join in a taster workshop at the end of the performance - bring your guitar if interested!
- 4-4.30pm - Coastline Harmony performing in the community space. A friendly, award-winning all-female voice group of around 30 members who share a love of a cappella singing and enjoy performing a range of rock and pop, ballads, folk and songs from shows.
