Saltdean Lido's crowdfunder clock is ticking
Saltdean Lido has until 1 June to raise £104,000 which would then release £4.19 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
So far 500 people have pledged more than £32,000; just over 30% of the final target. Money pledged includes over £12k of cheques sent in by local people.
Sally Horrox, chair of Saltdean Lido CIC, said "Many people think as the pools re-opened last year the job is done, but that is far from the case. We really need people to come on-board now to support us and would particularly ask businesses to please get involved and help us too. The Lido will have a huge economic impact on Saltdean and the local area, the pools alone have 30 employees across the season and with the building open there would be significantly more local jobs and growth in tourists to the area. "
“People are doing so many great things to help but if we don’t reach the £104k target, under the crowdfunding rules, we can’t collect any of the pledges made! And then we will be handing the keys back as we won’t be able to carry on.”
The Saltdean Lido Trust (registered charity no. 1173503) was set up with the aim of restoring and maintaining the only Grade II* listed coastal lido in the country. Regarded as one of the finest examples of an outdoor swimming pool of this period, it has been variously described as:-
- “Probably the most architecturally significant open-air pool in the country" (20th Century Society)
- "One of the really first-class designs of its type” (Building Magazine)
- “Particularly glorious, with elegant, curved lines - like a stately ocean liner “(The Daily Telegraph)
- "One of the Seven Wonders of the English Seaside” (Historic England)
