We would like to hear your views about a proposal to remove the westbound A259 ‘Roedean School’ bus stop on safety grounds. This is the stop opposite Roedean School heading towards Brighton. The council is gathering comments in order to make an informed decision which takes in to account the views of everyone who may be interested.
There are no plans to remove or change the Roedean School stop on the eastbound side of the road, which would remain in use.

Reasons for removing the bus stop
The bus stop is located on the south side of the A259 coast road, and for people coming from the north side (such as Roedean School or the eastern end of Roedean Village) it can only be reached by crossing the busy 50mph coast road at an uncontrolled informal crossing point, which can be dangerous for pedestrians and other road users.
The council has recently received requests that the bus stop should be removed to deter people from attempting to cross the road at this location.
What are the alternatives if the bus stop is removed?
For people heading towards Brighton, or who normally alight at the Roedean School stop, there are nearby alternative bus stops at Roedean Golf Course on Roedean Road (served by routes 47, 52 and 57) or the Roedean Café bus stop on the A259 coast road (served by routes 12, 12A, 14, 14B, 14C, 27 and 27B) which can be reached through a safer route using a pedestrian crossing controlled by traffic signals.
What happens to the bus shelter?
If the Roedean School westbound bus stop is removed from use, the council will seek to relocate the bus shelter to a nearby alternative bus stop. This would be subject to a feasibility study to assess site suitability and ensure it is located where it would be of most benefit to bus passengers.
