Illustrator and author Chris Riddell’s new mural has added a fantastic finishing touch to the recently refurbished children’s section in Hove Library.
The library ran a competition for its young readers to send photos in to be included in the mural and you can see the faces of the winners in the frame!
Chris also took the opportunity to entertain children and grown-ups from the nearby St Andrews primary school.
The children’s section of the library was refurbished over the summer as part of the wider improvements to Hove Library, helping us make the most of the historic building.
Hove Library developments
The library service is now working with new partners to make the most of the educational and cultural facilities of Hove Library to reach new audiences and attract new users.
These partnerships also bring in much needed income to help support library services and to ensure the long term sustainability of running library services in the current building.
The first stage in developing the new areas was setting up a new study space for British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) in the building in 2017.
We have now also converted former offices on the lower ground floor into a nursery run by Hove Village and set up a community café in the main library area. This is run by Café Domenica - a charity whose main focus is working with young adults with learning disabilities.
Customers can take drinks away to other areas of the library, apart from the Wolseley Room on the upper floor due to the sensitive archival materials in that room.
For those who prefer a quieter space, the upper floor of the library remains a quiet area for study and reading.
Many thanks to Chris Riddell - please come along and have a look!
