Sponsor found for new seafront vehicle

The search for a sponsor for the Lifeguarding team’s seafront vehicle has come to an end after leading merchant banking group, Close Brothers stepped forward.

Close Brothers sponsored the seafront vehicle after reading about how the seafront team needed a new pickup truck to replace their ageing Ford. They were keen to collaborate with the council, help create better links between private business and public services and show their appreciation of the work the seafront team do.

The seafront team use the new seafront vehicle, a Toyota Hilux Truckman, on their early morning patrols when they check the whole Brighton & Hove coastline. During this time they do a complete inventory of the seafront which includes checking all the facilities, such as children’s play areas and beach huts, looking out for rough sleepers, monitoring the beach conditions and checking whether anything has been washed up. This daily inventory ensures the beach is ready for the millions of people that visit every year and helps keep them safe.

David Thomson, CEO - Close Brothers Invoice Finance & Rentals Division, said: “The seafront office provides such a vital service offering advice, providing first aid and saving lives.  As a local employer, Close Brothers are absolutely delighted to be able to support both the community and Brighton & Hove City Council.”

The lifeguard team have all successfully completed a rigorous beach lifeguard qualification and a week-long induction course acquiring a wide range of skills from assessing sea and weather conditions and dealing with beach hazards, to carrying out first aid and water rescues.  Last year, the seafront team saved 33 lives and gave help or safety advice to over 27,000 people.

Councillor Alan Robins, Chair of the council’s economic development committee, said:

“The seafront team does a great job making sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time on our beaches and in the sea. This new vehicle will help them to patrol the eight miles of Brighton & Hove’s seafront much more efficiently so it’s an essential piece of equipment for the team. We’re thankful therefore to Close Brothers for sponsoring the vehicle.”
