Views sought on two new parking zones
Residents and businesses are being consulted by the council on introducing two new controlled parking areas – one around Balfour Road, the other in Preston Village.
Questionnaires are due to be arriving at homes this week and the survey is also available online.
The move is in response to an increasing number of comments and complaints received by the council about high numbers of vehicles parked all day and into the evening. This has led to a severe shortage of space for residents.
Options proposed are parking schemes operating between 9am – 8pm or for two restricted periods during the day, yet to be agreed.
These options could potentially be available either Monday to Friday or all week. Schemes would include bays for use by residents and their visitors, businesses and services.
Proposals also address other issues such as double parking and parking on pavements and double yellow lines. Overall, the aim is to improve safety for pedestrians as well as improving traffic flow and access for emergency vehicles.
An unstaffed exhibition to illustrate details of the proposals is being held at the Parking Information Centre, Hove Town Hall, Norton Road, BN3 3BQ, until 11 November, Monday–Friday, 10am-4.30pm Saturday 9am – 1pm.
Anyone unable to attend the exhibition but who would like further technical information should email parking.scheme@brighton–hove.gov.uk or call (01273) 292387 between 9.30–12.00, 4–14 October.
Results of the consultation will be reported to the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee on 17 January 2017.
Committee chair Cllr Gill Mitchell said: “In all cases parking schemes are created in response to residents’ requests. We always do our best to accommodate local views in the detailed design of a scheme. So it’s important everyone lets us have their views, all of which will be carefully considered.”
Both areas could be new controlled parking zones,, or the Balfour Road area could be an extension to Area F if residents preferred.
Balfour Road is just north-east of Preston Park, off Preston Drove.
