New Cycle Hub at Brighton Station
Brighton station’s £1.5m, 500 space cycle hub has been formally opened today, 26 March 2015, by Rail Minister, Baroness Kramer.
The new hub which is situated at the rear of the station provides 500 secure cycle parking spaces and much, much more than somewhere to park the bike for both Southern passengers and non-rail travellers alike.
Also at the hub on the ground floor are a cycle repair/maintenance workshop and a coffee shop for those in need of refreshment after a hard cycle to the station.
Upstairs, there are yoga and spinning bike facilities, showers, changing rooms and accessible toilets. Office space for rent is also on offer for those who need it on a short term basis.
Funding for the £1.5m hub has been provided by the Department for Transport, Brighton and Hove City Council and Network Rail.
Southern’s Deputy Managing Director, David Scorey said: “This is our biggest and best cycle hub yet. Brighton station has long been in need of more cycle parking and what we now have is a high quality comprehensive facility. We could not have provided such a superb building without the help and support of our partners who have been instrumental in making the dream a reality.”
Brighton & Hove City Council’s Lead Member for Transport, Ian Davey, said: “Brighton station is one of the country’s busiest stations and the new cycle hub is part of a wider scheme to provide a much improved welcome to people arriving in the city.
“Cycling to work in Brighton & Hove has more than doubled over the past four years and I hope these first class facilities will encourage more residents, commuters and visitors to choose cycling as their mode of transport into and around the city.”
Network Rail’s South East Route Enhancement Manager, Mike Smith said: "Like train travel, cycling is an environmentally-friendly form of transport that is getting more and more popular every year. The creation of this building reflects its importance as part of greener, cleaner travel in the South East."
The cycle parking is safe and secure with 24 hour access to cyclists using Southern’s free smartcard – the key and the addition of the hub’s 500 spaces brings the total at the station to around 800.
The opening of the new hub follows the announcement from the Department for Transport that Southern is to receive funding for further cycle parking improvements at 15 Southern stations in Sussex and Surrey which includes funding for cycle hubs at Hove and Portslade and improved cycle parking facilities at London Road Brighton and Moulsecoomb.
