The first ever wedding to take place in Brighton’s historic Old Police Cells was held at the weekend on Sunday 17 May.
Derek Todd and Sandra Puttock from Ramsgate in Kent chose to celebrate their wedding in Brighton & Hove because they love visiting the city. The happy couple were also looking for a location with a quirky and fun atmosphere.
Sandra explains: “We wanted something a bit different for our wedding day and we researched online for unusual venues in Brighton & Hove. The Old Police Cells was exactly right for us. It was a lot of fun being married next to the cells with our guests around us. It was definitely not a traditional wedding!”
After the ceremony, Derek and Sandra walked down to the beach to see the annual London to Brighton Mini Run at the finish line on Madeira Drive before heading off for an evening celebration.
The Old Police Cells are housed in the basement of Brighton Town Hall. The museum was opened in 2005 to commemorate the history of Sussex Police and give an insight into the operations of the Brighton Borough main police station which was based at the site from 1830 to 1967. Exhibitions of police uniform and equipment through the years can be viewed alongside the original cells.
