City’s pupils set new benchmark against rest of country for GCSEs
Secondary school pupils across Brighton & Hove have scored their highest ever results for the percentage of pupils who have achieved five A*-C GCSE including English and Maths at 59.7% - this outperforms the national average by 3.4 percentage points.
In addition to being above the national state funded schools average, Brighton & Hove pupils also achieved above the South East average, and nearby local authorities. This is the highest position relative to the national results on record. In 2012/13 when Brighton & Hove was above national it was by 1.4 percentage points
The progress pupils made from the tests at age 11 in English was also well above the national average, but maths was just below.
Significantly results for boys are 4.3 percentage points above national and girls are 2.3 percentage points above.
Cllr Tom Bewick, Chair of the Children & Young People Committee, said:
“Congratulations to all the pupils, schools and teachers who have worked so hard to achieve these outstanding results. The city’s children are outperforming the rest of the country by the widest margin since records began.
“Our schools and the council’s education team deserve a lot of credit for the hard work they have put in this year.
“This is great news but it also has to be seen as a work in progress. I want to see a lot more of our young people achieving the benchmark five good GCSEs figure in future.
“I will be calling on our schools and the council’s education team to redouble their efforts to drive forward further improvements in the coming years.”
