Celebration of 500th couple to convert from CP to marriage
A couple celebrating their marriage have marked a milestone in Register Office history in Brighton & Hove this morning.
Steve Bustin and John Williams converted their Civil Partnership (CP) status to marriage at Brighton & Hove City Council's Register Office at 10am today, Monday 28 September.
The couple's conversion from CP to marriage was the 500th to be registered in Brighton & Hove.
Steve and John met with their registrar for the formal conversion process before speaking to media who gathered for the occasion.
BHCC’s lead councillor for city services, Les Hamilton says: “Steve and John are the 500th couple in Brighton and Hove to convert their Civil Partnership to marriage, making us the busiest register office in the country to-date for conversions and affording us an accolade we’re very proud of.”
The final step to marriage equality took place on Wednesday 10 December 2014 when anyone in a civil partnership could convert to a marriage if they chose to do so.
