Government backing for Valley Gardens

Brighton & Hove city council has successfully bid for £895,000 from Government to invest in the Valley Gardens Development Project.

It’s part of investment into sustainable transport schemes which bring environmental, health and economic benefits to the local community.

Councillor Ian Davey, Lead for Transport said. “This is a ringing endorsement for the Valley Gardens project and I’m delighted that the Government is supporting sustainable transport improvements in the city. This grant will mean that we can engage and support businesses and schools in the wider area which will amplify the economic and health benefits and build on the 14 million pounds available to the council to this transformational project.”

The Local Sustainable Transport Fund Valley Gardens East Project will provide targeted sustainable transport measures to the Valley Gardens wider area including the strategic A259 transport Corridor and the Edward Street Quarter Development area. These measures build on the success of the LSTF project along the Lewes Road Educational Corridor.

Key initiatives that will be delivered as part of this project will include:

Personalised Travel Planning (PTP)
Business and destination Travel Planning
University & College Travel Planning – including real-time information screens in reception areas in the college and university buildings and wider support for sustainable travel initiatives.
School Travel Planning – including support for sustainable transport initiatives, Safe and Sustainable Travel Training for pupils and staff cycle training
Community based cycle training/mechanic – Full time community based cycle trainer/mechanic offering free sessions to local residents throughout the year
Cycling & Walking Permeability studies to identify improvements to  make it easier to walk, cycle or use the bus

The Department for Transport is providing £64 million towards the schemes in the latest round of its Local sustainable Transport Fund, with Local Enterprise Partnerships investing over £100 million of the funding they received earlier this week as part of the Local Growth Fund. Further match funding will take the value of the package to over £440 million.
