Get Active for 2014!
A day of sporting fun is taking place in the city centre of Saturday 8 February. Brighton & Hove City Council’s Sports Development Team will be running demonstrations and taster sessions throughout the day at Churchill Square.
Shoppers will be encouraged to take a break from browsing stores to try out sports and watch dance. The aim is to encourage people of all ages to find new activities to enjoy in the year ahead.
Named Active You 2014!, the event features representatives from the council’s sports development team alongside dance and sporting groups. There will be demonstrations of sports and activity classes on offer at various locations around the city. And sport enthusiasts will be available all day to share their knowledge and skills.
The event will take place in the lower mall of the shopping centre from 8.30am until 7pm. Activities include:
- Active For Life In Shape For Life programme, an introduction to fitness circuits classes available city-wide
- An “Olympic Challenge” for the younger generation with basic jumping and throwing challenges
- Ping Pong on a full size table with a coach on hand to advise
- Information about Bokwa classes with a demonstration from Freedom Leisure
- Marina Studios and StreetFunk street dance performances
- Flamenco performances and Zumba demonstrations
Cllr Geoffrey Bowden said: “Exercise provides a boost in mood as well as many physical health benefits. During these winter months it can be very rewarding to start a new activity or join a sports class. There are so many different options to choose from with a wide range of activity levels to suit everyone. The council’s Sports Development team has a wealth of information and supports groups across the city. The Active You 2014! event is designed to give as many people as possible access to this wonderful resource.”
The Sports Development team will be available all day to chat with people passing by and explain about how to sign up for classes. There will also be a prize draw open to anyone who joins the Sports Development mailing list. Prizes include free sessions or memberships at the participating groups’ venues and classes.
