Expansion plan for Saltdean Primary School
Plans to expand Saltdean Primary School could take a big step forward on July 21.
Brighton & Hove City Council’s children and young people committee will consider the results of consultation on a proposal to expand the school from two forms of entry to three as of September 2015.
There is increasing pressure on primary school places in the Saltdean area. Expanding Saltdean Primary is seen as the best way to cater for this demand.
Because of the location of Saltdean, the nearest alternative schools where there are spare places would be over three miles away for children living there. A majority of respondents to the consultation were in favour of expanding the school.
Councillor Sue Shanks, chair of the children and young people committee, said: “I believe we need to do everything we can to enable young children to go to a school that’s near to them.
“I’m confident that we can expand Saltdean primary in a way that maintains its current ethos and excellent standards.”
Councillors are being recommended to give the go-ahead to publishing appropriate statutory notices regarding the proposed expansion. A final decision would be made at a meeting of the committee in October.
