Brighton & Hove City Council has begun a consultation process with residents and business owners to gauge support for a residents parking scheme within the Lewes Road Triangle Area. It is proposed that the scheme would be an extension to the adjacent Area J residents parking scheme.
As part of the consultation the council is also asking about cycle ownership among residents in the area with a view to providing additional on-street cycle parking if there is a need.
Questionnaires are being sent to all households in the area this week and residents have until 9 May 2014 to respond.
The consultation is in response to the city wide parking review where the council received comments and complaints from local residents about parking problems in the area.
The proposed scheme would operate between 9 am – 8 pm, Monday to Sunday and provide bays for use by residents and their visitors, businesses and services. The proposals also address other issues, such as double parking and parking on pavements and double yellow lines, with a view to improving safety for pedestrians as well as improving traffic flow and access for emergency vehicles.
A staffed exhibition to illustrate details of the proposals and to give people the opportunity to put their questions to council officers will be held at the Calvary Evangelical Church, Viaduct Road on Wednesday 23 April between 1-5pm and Thursday 24 April between 4-8pm. There will also be an unstaffed exhibition at Hove Town Hall, in the Parking Information Centre, between 9am and 5pm from 31 March to 9 May 2014.
Anyone unable to attend the exhibition but who would like further technical information should email parking.consultation@brighton-hove.gov.uk or call (01273) 292194.
The consultation period will run for 6 weeks, and all comments received during this time will be carefully considered. The results of the consultation will be reported to the council’s Environment, Transport & Sustainability (ETS) Committee on 1 July 2014.
Cllr Pete West said: “As with all consultations it is an opportunity for the community to give their views on the various parking problems they experience on a daily basis and allow us to find the most practical way forward to alleviate them.
“The number of people using cycles as their mode of transport around the city is on the increase and we also need to factor this in when designing new parking schemes to ensure there is sufficient provision for people to park bikes easily and safely.”
