Gritter Garbo and friends gear up for winter weather
Seven gritters have been named from suggestions put forward by residents.
Gritter Garbo tops the list, with Electra, Brighton Belle, True Grit, Alexander the Grit and Melton John (the last name was chosen from a list put forward by listeners of Juice FM). The ‘go anywhere’ machine formerly known as the Unimog will now go under the name of Snowbug.
Brighton & Hove’s gritters were named to make it easier to update the public on where they have been in different areas of the city. It means the council can let residents and businesses know that the gritters are out and about, preparing the roads or tackling snowfall on the main routes.
Residents were invited to name the gritters through social media and they took to the task with enthusiasm, making over 150 suggestions.
The shortlisted names were selected from the most popular names.
Brighton & Hove’s winter service team is ready and prepared for severe weather and the latest weather, news and progress are posted on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #BHsnow.
There is a winter duty manager on 24 hour duty during the winter period monitoring weather conditions and deciding when to send out the gritters. Depot co-ordinators and gritter drivers are also on 24 hour stand-by.
Residents will be able to get updates and track the newly named gritters around the city. Residents can do this by clicking on the #BHsnow hashtag on Facebook and Twitter.
