Newly qualified teachers
Information about registering and newly qualified teacher status.
Registering a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT)
Newly qualified teachers must be registered with an appropriate body in order to carry out the induction year.
Brighton & Hove City Council offers this service to maintained schools, academies, free schools, independent schools, colleges and any setting outside Brighton & Hove.
For details of our support packages and costs, please contact Sharon MacKenzie, NQT Induction Co-ordinator, tel 01273 293465, email: schools.training@brighton-hove.gov.uk
NQT registration is carried out online by schools. Once schools contact the appropriate body they will receive a login to the BEEM portal to register.
Induction can be served in more than one school and there is no time limit for completion, although supply teaching can only be carried out for five years after the date of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), so it is advisable to carry out induction before that time. As well as full-time NQTs, we can accept:
- NQTs starting at any time of the year
- Part-time NQTs
- NQTs employed on supply contracts for at least a term
In each case, the appropriate body will decide whether the post is suitable for induction, according to the circumstances and the Statutory Guidance for the Induction of Newly Qualified Teachers.
Qualified Teacher Status
To start induction, NQTs must have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This is normally awarded around the end of July following completion of initial teacher training. However, in some cases, NQTs may not be awarded QTS until September. Headteachers must be aware of the procedures for checking QTS when employing all teachers.
Headteachers can check that the teacher has QTS via the Department for Education's Secure Access website. The database will also inform you whether a teacher is exempt from induction, depending on when they achieved QTS.
