Young Sports Personality of the Year

Judging criteria

This person has made significant progress in their chosen sport over the past 12 months, either as an individual or as part of a team. They are competing at a high level within their age group and / or in open competition.


Joel Thompson (Shiverers Swimming Club): Swimming at County, Regional and National level, over the past year our winner has achieved 10 Swimming pool National Qualifying Times and also qualified for the Open water event. He sits at number one in the County in his age group and has held this position since he was 9. This summer he won the ASA National Open Water 1.5k Championships, and has finished first overall in both county and regional competitions, finishing 4th overall in the National British Age Group Category. He has tremendous potential and we wish him the very best of luck for the future.

Highly Commended:

Robbie Fitzgibbon (Phoenix Athletics Club): Robbie has had a sensational year as he has started to develop his potential competing at a national level. The past year has seen him step up to become English Schools 1500m Champion, alongside silver at the National Under 20 Road Mile and bronze in the National Under 20 Indoor 1500m, he is showing the dedication to training that will enable him to build on these achievements into the future.

We bequest grants to individuals from Brighton & Hove to take part in recognised governing body talent development programmes.
