Rebuilding the seafront arches
We're rebuilding dozens of Victorian arches along Brighton seafront.
Seafront arches available to let will be advertised on our trading on the seafront web page.
The historic arches support the seafront promenade and are a vital part of our seafront infrastructure. After 120 years, it’s time for some of the arches to be replaced.
It's a £5 million award winning scheme. The scheme will strengthen the busy A259 trunk road above.
Phase one of the project is complete and phase two is currently underway.
West Pier arches, Kings Road
The first phase created shops and new public toilets from 26 arches. These arches are between Alfresco’s restaurant and the former West Pier.
Beginning in 2012, all the original structures had to be demolished and recreated using steel-reinforced concrete.
The first shops in the rebuilt arches opened in summer 2014. The scheme won a Sussex Heritage Trust Award for outstanding conservation work. Find out about the businesses in the West Pier arches
Regency Square subway to the Metropole Hotel
A further 33 chalet arches further east are now being rebuilt.
They're due to reopen in early 2017. These are being earmarked for a variety of commercial uses, plus a museum about Brighton & Hove's famous West Pier.
We're using specially made bricks, along with hand-crafted wooden doors and window frames. Traditional techniques have been used to create new cast iron railings with Victorian patterns.
The Regency Square subway is closed while the work is underway.
