Kayak and Watercraft Storage Permit terms and conditions
1. Annual Permit Fee
1.1 The annual storage permit fee is set by Brighton & Hove City Council and published on the Council’s website.
1.2 The fee is payable in full on 1st April each year.
1.3 Details of any changes to the fee will be available on the council website prior to 1st April each year.
1.4 Permits are nonrefundable
2. Permit Requirement
2.1 A valid storage permit must be clearly displayed on the watercraft at all times.
2.2 Where no permit is displayed, the Council may issue a 30 day removal notice.
2.3 Watercraft without a permit may then be removed and disposed of.
2.4 Permit holders must ensure the permit remains attached, legible and weather resistant.
3. Storage Conditions & Responsibilities
3.1 The watercraft must be securely fastened against weather, tides or interference.
3.2 The craft must be kept in a safe, seaworthy and tidy condition.
3.3 The craft must not create a hazard, obstruction or nuisance to other beach users.
3.4 Ancillary items may be stored inside the craft at the owner's risk.
3.5 The permit holder must inform the Council of contact detail changes within 14 days.
4. Condition, Safety & Removal
4.1 The Council may issue a removal notice if the craft presents a safety risk.
4.2 Immediate dangers may lead to removal without notice.
4.3 Removed craft must be collected within 28 days.
4.4 The permit holder is responsible for removal or disposal costs.
5. Prohibited Uses
5.1 No commercial or business use is allowed from the craft while stored on the beach.
5.2 Hazardous or flammable materials cannot be stored in or around the watercraft.
5.3 Sleeping inside the boat or antisocial behavior is prohibited.
5.4 Permits cannot be shared, transferred or hired.
6. Liability
6.1 Storage is entirely at the permit holder’s risk.
6.2 The Council accepts no responsibility for loss, theft, damage, deterioration or vandalism
7. Termination by the council
7.1 Permits may be withdrawn for unpaid fees, breaches of the terms and conditions and safety risks.
7.2 If the Council intends to carry out redevelopment or operational works requiring the removal of the watercraft, two months’ notice will be given where reasonably possible. In these circumstances only, the remaining portion of the permit fee will be refunded.
8. Termination by the permit holder
8.1 Watercraft can be removed by the permit holder at any time. No refund will be given for any unused portion of the permit fee.
9. After termination
9.1 The area must be left clean and clear.
9.2 Unremoved craft may be disposed of at the permit holder’s cost.
10. Notices
10.1. Notices will be sent to the permit holder’s last known contact details.
10.2. Notices to the Council must be emailed to: seafrontoffice@brighton-hove.gov.uk
11. General
11.1. The Council may introduce reasonable new rules and regulations relating to watercraft storage at any time.
11.2. These terms do not affect the Council’s statutory rights and powers
11.3. Beach areas may be closed by the Council for safety or operational reasons.
