Chronic Respiratory Disease - signposting
Preface
This is a compilation of key existing research and evidence, including links to publicly accessible content and sites with restricted access for registered users.
It is not a comprehensive list of all resources available.
Respiratory disease affects one in five people and people may live with these diseases as a chronic condition for life, referred to as Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD). Respiratory disease is the third biggest cause of death in England. Lung cancer, pneumonia, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are the biggest causes of death.
Respiratory diseases include the following conditions, and these links take you to the NHS conditions pages which gives more information on each of the conditions, their causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and living with these conditions:

This strategy sets out our vision for the health and wellbeing of people and communities in Brighton & Hove, together with the core principles which will guide local action to deliver the vision. It presents a shared view of where we are and of the challenges and opportunities that we face.

The NHS England Long Term Plan for respiratory disease
The NHS Long Term Plan identifies respiratory disease as a clinical priority. It outlines how the NHS will target investment to improve treatment and support for people with respiratory disease, with an ambition to transform outcomes to equal, or better, our international counterparts.
The Major Conditions Strategy 2023 framework identifies six groups of conditions which are collectively the greatest contributors to ill-health and early mortality, including respiratory diseases.
The six conditions represent the cause of over 60% of the years lost to early death or lived in ill health. It recognises that people may have more than one of these conditions and aims to work on addressing similar causes and risk factors.
Core20PLUS5 is a national NHS England approach to inform action to reduce healthcare inequalities at both national and system level. The approach defines a target population – the ‘Core20PLUS’ – and identifies ‘5’ focus clinical areas requiring accelerated improvement.
It includes Chronic Respiratory Disease with a clear focus on increasing levels of vaccination (influenza, COVID, and pneumococcal) in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) to reduce exacerbations and emergency hospital admissions.
