Job introduction

Start date: September 2023
Full-time permanent post

Group 2 Salary Leadership scale L8 – 21A     £52,659 - £71,765    NOR 195

Due to the untimely departure of our current Head Teacher on health grounds, the Governors are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, passionate and highly skilled Head Teacher. They will have excellent communication and leadership skills to lead our fantastic team, inspire us to continue to improve, raise pupil attainment and progress.

About the role

About Us:

We are a friendly and happy single form entry Voluntary Aided Local Authority primary school. Our school motto is “Learning to Love, Loving to Learn” and this is reinforced by the Christian ethos that underpins every aspect of school life. We have been described as “a village school in the heart of the city.”

The children are proud of their school and their community and at St. Martin’s we provide a safe and secure learning environment for them to thrive and grow into confident contributing members of the community. It is an innovative community which seeks to ensure that all our children have access to creative learning opportunities within an environment which we are constantly seeking to develop and improve.

We have a dedicated and enthusiastic team of Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Support Staff and Governors with an active group of parents. We all work together to create a school environment where everyone’s contribution is valued, and children know that their achievements and successes are recognised.

The Appointment:

The Governors, well aware of the strains of the Pandemic and recovery period, exacerbated by long-term absences of the previous headteacher, are seeking to appoint a forward thinking, yet understanding, committed and informed Head Teacher with excellent communication skills who would continue to maintain the clear Christian ethos and vision. This is evident in the creative relationship between the Parish Priest and the School Community as a whole, and the way that our culture and values are embedded in all that we do, the result being a happy, loving and purposeful place.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to further develop their career and build upon skills already gained from being a successful Head Teacher or a Deputy Head Teacher. The successful candidate will work in partnership with all stakeholders to ensure the continuing success and progression of our pupils.  They will promote the further development of working practices which take account of the emotional needs of the pupils, recognizing the range of barriers to learning which can exist for some.  They will also explore the possibilities of key partnerships with schools within the region to develop strong and mutually constructive relationships which enhance the quality of education, care and professional development of the school communities.

We are looking for a leader who will be able to challenge, inspire and motivate their team and develop a strategic vision for the school.

Ofsted judged the school in September 2017 as Good.  This followed a period of intense work to improve from Requiring Improvement in 2015, for which, in 2016, we were praised by Her Majesty’s Inspector for having ‘improved substantially’ and who stated that:

The school’s work actively promotes diversity and inclusion, makes a strong contribution to pupil’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, and provides many opportunities for pupils to prepare for life in modern Britain’.

In March 2018 we were judged as Outstanding in the Section 48 SIAMS inspection.
