Job introduction

We are looking for a Highway Enforcement Officer to join the Highway Regulation team. The team is responsible for licensing items including scaffolds and skips on the public highway whilst enforcing against all types of highway obstructions and dangers.

About the role

The role requires an inquisitive mind with attention to detail, the successful candidate will be able to deal with various enquiries from negotiating outside seating space for a new restaurant; to authorising the removal of burnt-out abandoned vehicle and attending court as a witness to a breach of the highways act 1980.

The Highway Regulation team controls and licences various items on the public highway, these include skips, scaffolds, hoardings, cranes, outside seating for restaurants, shop displays and Advertising boards. We are also responsible for dealing with any obstructions to the public highway including abandoned cars and bikes, overhanging vegetation and building materials. The role is very varied, officers spend 75% of their day out of the office in all weathers carrying out inspections and investigations. Whilst we mainly deal with items on the public highway, we also investigate abandoned vehicles on open land, this can include parks and green spaces so sometimes requires the ability to walk over rough terrain in woods for example.

Interview date: w/c 19th Sep
