Job introduction

Building Services Engineer (Electrical Design)

Grade M11 £33,486 to £36,371

Hove Town Hall, Hove. 37 Hours per week with flexible hybrid working

No two days are the same in Brighton & Hove City Council’s Building Surveying Team! If you like genuine diversity in your Electrical Building Services Engineering work and are looking to learn new skills, then we have a fantastic opportunity for you following the promotion of the previous job holder.

This council has set the City an ambitious carbon neutral target by 2030 and this is your chance for you to contribute to that in a positive, meaningful way.

From undertaking Electrical design and specification work, finding solutions to rectifying defects, organising stand-alone electrical work, programmes for renewables such as carbon-reduction Solar PV, energy efficiency works such as LED lighting replacement, Electric Vehicle Charging and supporting the Building Surveyors as part of a design team approach to refurbishment projects. We deal with schools, social care premises, non-housing buildings, listed historic buildings, etc.

About the role

We need team players who are strong on Health and Safety, confident on AutoCAD, have monitoring contractor electrical design and performance on site skills, a flexible approach, good communication skills with the ability to work under pressure in our trusted, busy team of professionals.

You will ideally already be qualified, or working towards qualification, as an Electrical Building Services Engineer of the IET, CIBSE or similar approved with relevant experience. You will be well supported by the team as you grow your career. We welcome applications from Graduates with some experience in electrical design, will help you with work time to study and provide a programme of in-house training and CPDs to help you grow and succeed. As an incentive, when you qualify, we will even pay your annual subs.

You will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of Client teams across the City who will value and respect your input. We remain sustainably independent as we generate fees through the works we manage. Always busy, we continue to secure further programmes of work and need to fill this post with the right person.

A message to you from one of the team ‘Having worked for BHCC for a few years now, there is one thing that has struck me – the variety of work. From the Brighton Centre to schools, the seafront and historic clocktowers, I have carried out repairs, maintained and restored such a varying degree of construction types. No project ever feels daunting as there is a wealth of experience in our team, that I know I can rely upon for support and advice whenever needed.’

In return you will enjoy a package of benefits that includes;

  • a healthy work life balance with flexible working hours
  • a laptop and iPhone for the days you work from home
  • an attractive pension scheme
  • generous annual leave from 23 days plus bank holidays plus 2 extra statutory plus 2 concessionary days per annum and flexi-days if you accrue additional hours
  • 24/7 access to free advice and support via the employee assistance programme
  • lifestyle benefits such as season ticket loans, travel and leisure discounts
  • tax-free benefits including the cycle to work scheme

Based at Hove Town Hall there will be opportunity for hybrid working to help ensure a real work life balance.
