Job introduction

Brighton & Hove City Council has a reputation as a leader for equality and inclusion and community cohesion, serving a diverse and vibrant city. It is our ambition to strive for excellence in everything we do, whether as an Employer of Choice or a City Council building a fairer city with a sustainable future.

We are now looking for exceptional people to take our equality and inclusion work to the next level.

We are looking for four new staff to join our Communities, Equality and Third Sector Service: an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Manager, two Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officers and an Administrator. Together, with an existing EDI officer, you will be the council’s brain and heart for equality, diversity and inclusion.

Interviews week commencing 20th December

For an informal chat about the role or to flag a reasonable adjustment for the application process, please call Emma McDermott, Head of Communities, Equalities and Third Sector, 07825113908.

About the role

Have you developed and delivered EDI projects which made an impact? Have you consulted and engaged different groups of people and communities on EDI projects? Have you built trusted relationships with diverse communities? Do you have a specialist interest in issues relating to disabled people or racially minoritised people? If so, we have a role that may suit you.

As an EDI Officer each day is varied and challenging, ranging from:

  • group meetings with members of communities who share a protected characteristic to co-produce new EDI projects, to
  • one-to-one meetings with council managers to help them reflect on and improve the inclusiveness of the their services to
  • briefing councillors on key equality issues.

You will be the lead for a specific protected characteristic; either race or disability equality as we already have a lead officer on LGBTQ+ in the team.

You will provide a high quality, reliable EDI business partnering service to all council services to ensure the council meets the Public Sector Equality Duty. Acting as a critical friend you will scrutinise and review council services’ policies, processes, procedures and practices and support them to find solutions.

You will deliver development work with diverse communities, taking into account intersectionality, to enable them to inform and influence the council.

We value having a diverse team and the knowledge and experience that individuals from different backgrounds bring to the role. We want you to bring your whole self to work. We welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds and aim to have a workforce that represents the communities we serve.

We encourage staff to consider joining one of our four staff networks and we are committed to reasonable adjustments and ongoing staff development. We will support you to be your best at Brighton & Hove city Council.

We are a Disability Confident employer and all candidates who are disabled or have a long term health condition are guaranteed an interview if they are able to demonstrate they meet the minimum criteria. If you need adjustments to apply due to a disability or long term health condition, please contact the recruiting manager.

As part of your application, you will need to complete your education and work history and upload a supporting statement. Your supporting statement is the most important part of your application as it will be used in the shortlisting process to assess whether you meet the essential requirements for the role that are set out in the person specification and to decide whether you should be offered an interview. Before you start your application, please read our guidance here (Supporting statement guidance (brighton-hove.gov.uk)) as this gives important advice which will increase your chance of success in the shortlisting process.
