Our values and Our People Promise

We are committed to developing and retaining a workforce that is representative of the diverse communities that we serve. We're building an inclusive workplace culture where all employees feel valued and where we celebrate their rich diversity. This culture is based on our values, behaviours and our people promise to our existing and future staff.

Our organisational values define how we should all work and behave. They help us to do our best for the city and provide excellent public services to our citizens. Our People Promise is a series of five commitments by the council to our staff. We want to be clear to our present and future staff what support we offer so that you can do your jobs well and feel valued at work.

Physical and mental wellbeing

We’re keeping our promise by ensuring our workforce is supported to be happy and well, both physically and mentally. We do this by providing health and safety and wellbeing support to all our staff including a 24/7 counselling and advice line.

A representative workforce

We’re keeping our promise by working towards having a workforce that is reflective of the community we serve, and where everyone experiences dignity and respect in the workplace. We do this by encouraging our staff networks as well as providing additional support to transgender and non-binary employees and our unpaid carers. We support flexible working and have a full range of family friendly policies including providing childcare vouchers.

Staff development

We’re keeping our promise by ensuring we develop all our people to do their best, and identify talent to support progression. We provide a wide range of training and development including coaching and mentoring and staff apprenticeships.

Rewarding our staff

We’re keeping our promise by ensuring we attract, reward, retain and motivate our staff, and to become the employer of choice in Greater Brighton. We are a living wage employer and offer a generous pension scheme as well as good staff discounts through My Staff shop.

A positive working environment

We’re keeping our promise by ensuring the way we do things around here allows staff to be at their best, and to make our offer as an employer clear to existing and future staff. We provide you with a positive working environment which includes flexible working and union recognition. We also offer annual leave and time off for volunteering.
