Move out of council housing
How to end your council tenancy if you're moving out of your property.
How to end your tenancy
Your tenancy with us does not automatically end when you move out of your council home.
You will need to give us notice, with the notice periods below.
Notice periods for moving
Notice periods for telling us you're moving are:
- 4 weeks if you're not moving to another Brighton & Hove City Council property
- up to 2 weeks if you're transferring to another council tenancy - your end date will be agreed with a re-housing officer
If you do not give us notice, you may still have to pay rent for the property even after you've moved out.
How to give notice
You need to log in to your Housing Online account and select ‘My Tenancies’ to give notice.
Log in or sign up to Housing Online
If for any reason you are unable to register, contact us:
Joint tenants
If you're joint tenants and one of you gives us notice to end the tenancy, the whole tenancy will end.
The remaining tenants may have to leave the property if the property is more suitable for another type of household, such as a family.
If you're the executor of a joint tenant who has died, contact the Council Housing team.
Moving out
After you've given us notice of your move, you should:
- read our things to do before you move out of your council home page
- carry out any repairs you're responsible for to avoid charges when you move out of your council home
- pay back any benefit overpayments you owe
Help with removal costs
If you can’t afford the costs of a removals company, you may be able to get one-off help from the council's Local Discretionary Fund. If they fund your removals, they will choose which company to use.

Contact the team for information and advice about applications to the fund.
If you're going to be away from your home
You must contact the Council housing team if you'll be away from your home for a long time (over 2 weeks). This includes staying in the hospital or going on holiday.
If you stop living in your council home and do not tell us, you may lose the right to your tenancy.
