Make an improvement to your council home
Request permission to make an improvement to your council home, including building sheds and installing CCTV.
What improvements you can make to your home
Tenants and leaseholders have the right to make improvements to their homes, but they must get permission before any work starts.
With permission, improvements you can make include building:
- sheds
- garages
- greenhouses
- extra fencing
You will have to pay for any improvements and find qualified tradespeople to carry out the work. The council will not pay or make the improvements for you.
Some works may also require planning permission, building regulation consent or highways approval.
What happens if your improvement request is approved
If we approve your request, a member of our housing team or a surveyor may visit your home to decide if you can start the work.
You may also need to get planning permission or building regulations approval. We'll tell you who to contact for this.
When you've finished, our surveyor will normally check the work and let you know if there's anything you need to change.
What happens if your improvement request is rejected
We'll only reject your improvement request if the work:
- affects the safety of your building
- causes a future problem with maintenance of the property
- causes nuisance to your neighbours
