Fire safety in council flats
What to do if there's a fire in your building, when to get out and when to stay put.
What to do if there's a fire
When to get out
If there's a fire in your flat you should get out straight away, stay out and phone 999 to ask for the fire service.
The East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has more information about how to plan a safe escape.
When to stay put
If there's a fire somewhere else in the building, the structure of your flat – walls, floors and doors – are designed to give appropriate protection.
In that situation, you're usually safer to stay in your flat with the doors and windows closed. If the heat or smoke from the fire is affecting you or you feel threatened by the fire and want to evacuate, do so.
Staying in your home will enable the fire service to enter the building and deal with the fire quickly.
If you stay in your flat, phone 999 immediately for advice and make sure the fire and rescue service know about the fire. The fire service will tell you if you need to leave the building.
Find information about the ‘stay put' Position Statement on the National Fire Chiefs Council website.
The East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (ESFRS) website has information on planning a safe escape.
In a few of our blocks, we're currently advising residents to evacuate immediately in the case of a fire.
We're operating a ‘waking watch’ for these buildings, a temporary precautionary measure to ensure everyone can evacuate safely if needed.
