Becoming an Age and Dementia Friendly City
We want Brighton & Hove to be an Age and Dementia Friendly city. Somewhere everyone can age well and keep doing the things they enjoy.
We're part of the World Health Organisation's Global Network for Age Friendly Cities and Communities and the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friendly Communities. You can find out more about these initiatives on the Centre for Ageing Better website and the Alzheimer’s Society website.
We are working in partnership with residents and key organisations to build a city where everyone can be supported to lead healthy and active lives.
The feedback we receive from our partners is used to improve the lives of our residents in 8 key areas of the city. This includes:
- transport
- civic participation and employment
- health and wellbeing
- care and housing
- buildings and outdoor spaces
- safety
- community support and social participation
- carer support and positive ageing

There are lots of ways to get involved and help us become an Age and Dementia Friendly city.
Become a Dementia Friend
Becoming an Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friend is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help to make a big difference.
There are over 12,000 Dementia Friends in Brighton & Hove. Join a growing number of residents helping to combat loneliness and change people’s perceptions of dementia.
Contact the Public Health Team to book onto a local free online 30 to 45 minute session or to arrange an in-person or online session for your team.
Alternatively you can find other national online free 30 to 45 minute sessions on the Dementia Friends website.
Age & Dementia Friendly training
The Age & Dementia Friendly training session has been developed to support everyone working with older people in Brighton & Hove.
This free 3-hour session delivered by Brighton & Hove Public Health looks at the principles which support people to age better. The session covers: ageism, accessibility and physical and mental changes that can happen when people age, including sight and hearing loss, mobility, social and psychological and dementia.

Become an Age & Dementia Friendly business or organisation
We would like businesses and organisations across Brighton & Hove to take a 5 simple steps to become more welcoming to older people and people living with dementia.
Making your business more accessible to older people and people living with dementia will benefit your business and improve the experience for all customers.

Join the Age & Dementia Friendly Brighton & Hove Alliance
The Age and Dementia Friendly Alliance provides an opportunity for everyone working with older people and people living with dementia in the city to come together to support one another, celebrate successes and learn from each other’s good practice and from other experts in the field. The Alliance’s members include faith groups, voluntary sector organisations, community centres, businesses, health care and council staff.
The group meets 4 times a year. To join the group, contact the Public Health Team.
