What the difference between supported lodging and foster care is
There are several differences between supported lodgings and foster care.
Supported lodgings carers provide an opportunity for young people (16 to 17 year olds at risk of homelessness and care leavers ages 18 and over) to live in the home of someone who will help them develop the practical skills and emotional maturity they need to move on to independent living.
Supported lodgings carers:
- provide a stepping stone to independence for young people
- have a shorter assesement and do not attend a Fostering Panel
- can lead their own lives, persue interests, hobbies and employment
- can consider the young person a member of their household, rather than their family
Foster carers:
- provide a family life for children who cannot live with their own parents
- have a full assessment and need to attend a Fostering Panel prior to approval
- cannot leave foster children unattended
- are expected to treat the young people in their care as if they were their own child
