Foster carer payments
Find out more about the competitive tax-free weekly payment foster carers receive.
About our fostering payment scheme
You’ll receive a weekly payment for every child in your care.
You could receive a minimum tax-exempt amount of £389 per week, up to £630 per week. This will depend on the type of fostering you do, the age of the young person in your care and your experience as a foster carer.
Our payment scheme is simple, fair, and easy to understand. It's very competitive alongside local independent fostering agencies and other local authorities.
We’ve really thought about our foster carers and our children in care. The amount you receive for the child considers costs such as birthdays, uniform, religious festivals and their school prom. The amount you receive for yourself recognises the complex task of fostering.
How your weekly payment is calculated
Your payment will consist of 2 parts. A professional "fee" for yourself and a day-to-day living "allowance" for the child.
Your weekly payment can be calculated by adding together the allowance per week for the child in your care, plus the fostering fee. As a respite carer your pay will be pro-rata.
- If you're a Level 2 carer looking after a 6-year-old child, you will receive £240 plus £300 (£540 per week in total).
- If you're a Level 2 carer looking after a 16-year-old child, you will receive £330 plus £300 (£630 per week in total).
Allowance
Foster Carers receive a weekly fostering allowance which is designed to cover the cost of caring for a fostered child.
| Age | Allowance per week |
|---|---|
| 0 to 2 years | £189 |
| 3 to 4 years | £196 |
| 5 to 10 years | £240 |
| 11 to 15 years | £291 |
| 16 to 17 years | £330 |
Fostering fee
Fostering fee payments are made on top of the allowance to recognise a foster carer’s time, skills and experience.
Level 1 Carer (£200 per week)
Whilst you are completing some training courses and a workbook in your first year, you will receive £200 per week.
Level 2 Carer (£300 per week)
After your first year, once you have completed the training courses and workbook, you will receive £300 per week.
If you are already a foster carer and are transferring to us, you will automatically be paid as a Level 2 carer.
