What the Multiply Adult Numeracy Programme is
The Multiply adult numeracy programme is a range of new intensive and free flexible maths courses targeted at people without level 2 maths. These courses could be the first step towards a Maths Functional Skills qualification.
Multiply aims to help people:
- improve their ability to understand and use maths in daily life, home, and work.
- make more sense of the facts in the media
- improve numeracy skills specific to a line of work.
They offer tailored options including:
- free personal tutoring
- digital training
- flexible courses that fit around people’s lives and tailored to meet specific needs.
- supporting learners to progress into employment and further education
Multiply is a priority of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). It supports the governments Levelling Up mission. By 2030, the mission aims to have significantly increased the number of adults completing high-quality skills training.
The Department of Education has allocated over £900,000 to Brighton and Hove to improve the functional numeracy skills of adults.

Aldridge Adult Learning
Aldridge Adult Learning are running free 10 week courses to increase numeracy skills for adults
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL): Maths Skills for a Better Life
Improve your maths, while improving your English. This 10 week course will cover essential maths skills and introduce you to some of the differences in how we write and teach maths in this country. The course is taught by experienced maths and language tutors, so that by the end of the course you can move on to a Functional Skills qualification.
You will study:
- numbers in our everyday lives
- adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing before moving on to fractions, decimals and percentages,
- metric and imperial systems of measurement
Get Confident with Maths
Would you like to feel more confident with the maths skills that are essential for life?
This 10-week course will be delivered by a tutor who is experienced at supporting learners who may lack confidence and feel anxious about maths.
You will study:
- adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing using traditional and alternative methods
- once you're ready, you'll move on to fractions, decimals and percentages,
By the end of the course you will feel confident to move on to a Functional Skills qualification

Functional Skills UK
Functional Skills UK are an independent Brighton based training provider. They're running Multiply maths courses in Brighton and Hove.
They also provide a wide range of qualifications which you can do online or in-person. This includes their Functional Skills course and online short courses
Whether you're employed or unemployed, they can help you develop your skills both in and out of the workplace.

The Grace Eyre Foundation
The Grace Eyre Foundation are running 6-week courses to increase numeracy skills for adults with a learning disability and/or autism.
You can learn more about:
- using and understanding numbers in everyday contexts
- using and understanding money
- budgeting and money management
- bank accounts and online banking
Each week you will attend a 3 hour session led by an experienced numeracy and SEN tutor with support from Grace Eyre.
Courses are free to attend, but you must make a commitment to attend all 6 sessions.

National Numeracy
National Numeracy is an independent charity with a vision for everyone in the UK to get on with numbers so they can get on in life.
Working in partnership with Brighton and Hove Council on the new Multiply programme they aim to empower residents across the city to feel more confident with everyday maths so they can fulfil their potential at work, at home and in everyday life.

National Numeracy is working with employers and community organisations across Brighton and Hove to train a network of Numeracy Champions.
Champions do not teach maths but act as mentors who can offer support to others. They can help adults to:

- overcome their barriers
- start their learning journey

The Workers Educational Association (WEA)
The WEA offer to improve your maths with their free maths courses and friendly, supportive tutors.
No matter what job you have, you’ll use maths skills every day. Research shows having a functional skills maths level two qualification can help you earn more. Many jobs will ask you to have a maths GCSE, so these maths courses will open the door to new opportunities.
The WEA's Maths functional skills course at Level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE Grade C or Grade 4 in maths. Employers and education providers should accept these as an alternative to a maths GCSE.

Whitehead-Ross Education and Consulting
Construction maths skills
These 15-hour courses incorporate core numeracy skills for working in the construction industry. They also support getting the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card with the intention of progressing onto secure employment in the construction industry.
Count on Your Future: Numeracy Boost for Jobseekers
These Sector-Based Work Academies are designed for anyone who is unemployed and keen to gain vital employment skills, specifically related to the industry they would like to work in.
Each Work Academy will include the basic maths and vocational skills required to move into employment within the relevant sector. Delivered over 15 hours, each Sector-Based Work Academy includes the vocational and technical learning that learners need to access employment opportunities.
Numeracy and Wellbeing
Our art and craft 12 hour courses will demonstrate how much maths you are using when making art, without even realizing it. Our range of Multiply courses will help learners feel more confident about their number skills whilst producing their own fantastic artwork.

Brighton Metropolitan College (MET)
The Brighton MET offers a range of maths classes to suit all abilities and aspirations. After you've applied to study with them, you will be invited into the college for an assessment and a chat with the maths department. This will determine what course and level are best for you and your goals.
Pre-GCSE and Functional Skills courses
If you're keen to gain a GCSE in maths but think you need a bit more time to prepare, the Pre-GCSE and Functional Skills courses could be the right level for you.
These courses give you the time and skills you need to be successful on the GCSE qualification in the future.

Building brighter futures in our community
The The Russell Martin Foundation are a registered charity that have a positive impact on children, young people and adults. They do this through football, education, health and improvement.
The aims of The Russell Martin Foundation
The Russell Martin Foundation is a non-profit registered charity (number 1174134) based in Brighton & Hove. It was set up by professional footballer Russell Martin (originally as the Russell Martin Academy), who wanted to give something back to the city he was born in.
Russell Martin Foundation Multiply Programme
They have been supporting families in Brighton and Hove through our education, wellbeing and health programmes. In response to the cost-of-living crisis and the needs of parents to learn better ways to budget and use money we are delivering our ‘Money Boost’ programme in schools. By working alongside our schools networks we will be supporting parents through interactive workshops onsite and online session to support parents.
There will also be the opportunity to receive a £20 voucher when you complete the course.
Themes of the workshops and support
Better budgeting
An opportunity to understand basic budgeting skills based on your household income, costs and spend - it allows people to explore their own budgeting whilst learning through group activities.
Building your savings
Savings is an important part of family life. In this session we will look at:
- what savings are
- how they can be effective
- hints and tips to cut costs
Parents and carers can help their children understand what savings are and implement practical saving ideas for them.
Teaching children about money and improving family communication
Enabling parents to help educate their children on the basics of money and what it means. This will provide parents the opportunity to create awareness and practical tips with their children from an early age.
Exploring numeracy through family and social activities.
This will explore how numeracy plays a role in family and social activities.
Through discussion and real-life examples the group will discover how numeracy plays a role in their daily lives. Tasks will be completed using numeracy challenges and financial awareness. Parents and carers will be tasked to complete the same exercise at home with their children.
Exploring values and attitudes towards money
There will be discussions and insight into how we view money and what these means to different people and organisations. Parent and carers will be tasked with discussing this subject and gaining views from their children.
