Our plan to talk about safety in tall buildings
An easy read version of our high-rise building safety resident engagement strategy.
Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) needs to:
- Make a plan to talk to people who live in tall buildings
- Follow the rules in the Building Safety Act 2022
This plan shows:
- How we will talk to you
- How we will listen to you
- How we will keep you safe in tall buildings
Read this with our other plan
This plan goes with another plan we have.
The other plan is about how we talk to people who:
- Rent from us
- Own a flat in our buildings
You can find the other plan on our website: Tenant and Leaseholder Engagement.
What this plan is about
Welcome to Brighton & Hove City Council's Building Safety Plan
This plan is about keeping people safe in tall buildings.
We want everyone who lives in, visits, or works in our buildings to be safe.
This plan follows the new Building Safety Act from 2022.
We promise to listen to residents and involve them in decisions.
After the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017:
• New laws were made to keep people safer.
• These laws say we must talk to residents more about safety.
In February 2024, the Building Safety Regulator started a new campaign:
- People living in tall buildings have more rights now.
- You can check if your tall building is registered.
- The Building Safety Regulator helps make buildings safer.
We want to:
- Listen to all residents.
- Make it easy for you to ask questions about safety.
- Help you report problems with building safety.
This plan explains:
- How we will tell you about building safety.
- How you can tell us about safety problems.
- How you can help make decisions about safety.
Why we made this plan
New Building Safety Rules
The Building Safety Act 2022 makes new rules for tall buildings
Tall buildings are at least 18 meters high or have 7 or more floors.
These buildings must have at least 2 flats.
The Person in Charge
Brighton & Hove City Council has chosen the Head of Housing Investment & Asset Management to be in charge of building safety.
His name is Geofrey.
Geofrey's Job is to:
- Make a plan to talk to residents about safety.
- Listen to residents' complaints about safety.
3. Make sure the building is registered and safe.
4. Put up information about building safety where everyone can see it.
5. Keep all safety information up to date and easy to understand.
6. Report any serious safety problems.
Talking to Residents
The law says we must have a plan to talk to residents about safety.
This plan is for people over 16 who live in or own a flat in the building.
We want to tell residents about safety and listen to their ideas.
Our plan will say
How we will talk to residents about safety.
How residents can help make decisions about safety.
How we will make sure everyone understands about building safety.
