Health and social care: What we do
We:
- help people to live healthy lives and be independent
- give people information and advice
- carry out care assessments
- help keep people safe
In 2022 to 2023:
- 3,934 people got a long term adult social care service
- 262 people got short term intensive support
- 18,560 pieces of daily living equipment were given out to people - things like walking frames
- 3,717 Care Assessments or reviews took place
About the population of Brighton & Hove
Population is the number of people who live here.
276,300 people live in Brighton & Hove.
19% of people are disabled.
A lot of people are aged between 20 to 60 years old.
1 out of 12 people care for others for free.
1 out of 3 older people live on their own.
22% of people over 20 years old have more than one health issue.
20% of 60 year olds do not have enough money.
More people are living unhealthy lives for longer.
A lot of people have problems with smoking, drinking, drugs and sexual health issues.
A lot of people have mental health problems.
We work with:
- adult social care staff
- public health and NHS staff
- people from community and voluntary organisations
This is to make sure that adults who need support are as safe and independent as possible.

Flexible integrated care and support
Working with other people to make sure there is a choice of services.
We have:
- worked with people with lived experience to plan a supported living home for people with a physical disability or a brain injury
- worked with Housing, the NHS and the Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust to make services better and stop homelessness
- worked with the new Changing Futures Team to make life better for people with complex needs
- helped more people with dementia to get the right care
- made an Autism Plan with the Brighton & Hove Autism Partnership Board
- looked at how to make our Direct Payments service better
We will:
- make sure health, care and community services work together to give people the support they need
- make sure everybody who lives in a care home is treated the same and with respect
- use new digital technology like the Brain in Hand app to help people who are neurodivergent
- give people more choice of supported accommodation and community care services
- keep listening to people with lived experience to make sure our services suit their needs
- finish our Transitions Plan to make sure young people with extra needs get the support they need
- make sure we are meeting the needs of people who use direct payments
Information and advice
Having the information I need, when I need it.
We have:
- created the Adult Social Care Hub so that it is easier for people to find what they need
- given more money to the Carer’s Hub so carers have a place to go for information
- worked with Speak Out to put easy read pages on our website - easy read makes sure people with learning disabilities get information in a way they understand
- made it easier to get help with losing weight, stopping smoking, drinking less alcohol and being more active through our Healthy Lifestyles Team
- worked with Together Co to help people do activities in the community
We will:
- find the best ways to give people the information and support they need to stay healthy
- keep our online information services and look at different ways for people to get information
- keep working with Speak Out to make sure people with learning disabilities get information in a way they can understand
- make sure we tell people where to go for support if we can’t help them
Living well and staying healthy
Helping people to stay healthy.
We have:
- helped 3,700 people get support to be healthier from our Healthy Lifestyles team
- encouraged more people to take part in cancer screening and to understand more about cancer
- made our stop smoking services vape friendly
We will:
- work with others to make plans and support people to stay healthy
- use our Local Action Plan to support people who are at risk or suicide or who self-harm
- look at how we support people with mental health
Staying active and connected
Helping people to be active and connected.
We have:
- started to show organisations how to give people with dementia a better experience
- talked to over 800 people in Brighton & Hove to help make a new Physical Activity plan
- helped organisations to work together to support people to stay active
- kept funding the Ageing Well service for people over 50 years old
- held the Ageing Well Festival
- helped organisations to work together to support people to stay active
- held the Dance Active event with 23 community dance groups
We will:
- start a Physical Activity plan for the next 10 years
- support people to be active and stay healthy for longer
Feeling safe and in control
Working with others to make people get good, safe services and feel in control.
We have:
- offered 70 free activities to help with strength and balance
- worked with Healthwatch to make homecare services better
- helped services give good quality care
- supported people to access money to pay their energy bills
- helped people feel safe at home through our CareLink Plus telecare alarm service
We will:
- carry on representing adult social care on the Local Safeguarding Adults Board
- make sure services give good quality care and do something if they don’t
- keep giving training to staff
Carers
Supporting carers so that they can carry on doing their important work.
We have:
- let people know about carers and some of the issues they face - this is called raising awareness
- worked with the NHS to keep the Carers Hub going
- given carers opportunities to help their mental and physical health
- taken part in the Sussex Carers Forum
We will:
- listen more to what carers are telling us and find out what they want
- update the Carers Plan to make Brighton & Hove a better place for carers
- given carers more opportunities though the Carers Card
Fair and inclusive city
Making sure services are accessible to everybody and that everybody gets support they need.
We want Brighton & Hove to be a place where everybody feels included.
Our city is made up of people from lots of different communities.
In Brighton & Hove:
- 25% of people are from a black or ethnic minority group
- 19% of people are disabled
- one out of ten people are gay, lesbian, bisexual or another sexual identity
- one out of a hundred adults are transgender
- more than 50% of people are not religious
We have:
- listened to what people from different communities have to say and what they need
- made sure we are thinking about everyone when we plan services
- made sure the council is an accessible place to work for everyone
We will:
- keep listening to people with lived experience
- use what people tell us to plan services that suit everyone
- continue to work towards services that are accessible and fair for everyone
- check that we work in the best way and make changes to improve things
- make sure we think of everybody’s needs when we plan services
- make sure the council is an accessible place to work for everyone
