About
Our Brighton & Hove Inclusion Support Service (BHISS) Autism and Language team works with schools and colleges to help them provide Autism, Language and Early Language support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
Autism support team
Our team:
- supports staff in schools with the Assess, Plan, Do, Review process
- advises Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs), teachers and teaching assistants about general support strategies for children who are autistic or have a social communication disorder
- can observe children so that they can identify strategies and give personalised advice to school staff about how to best support that child
- supports parents and carers with monthly ASC parent support coffee mornings and workshops
- can offer individual support to families to enable them to learn supportive strategies to support their autistic child
- provides training programmes for parents and carers, such as:
- Introduction to Autism
- Just Right approach which is a programme created by SEN specialist teachers and health professionals to help children achieve and maintain a calm and focused state
- provides a range of training programmes for schools
- works closely with other teams in BHISS
Autism and Language Team
The BHISS Autism and Language Team:
- provides advice, guidance and support for children with a diagnosis of autism, social communication disorder or significant speech, language and communication needs
- works closely with the NHS Speech and Language Therapy Service, where appropriate, and the additional support available can help children and young people meet their full potential
- works across early years settings and schools
- provides access to well-qualified and highly experienced Specialist SEN (Special Educational Needs) Teachers and Practitioners
