Schools and education
All training offered by the council to schools, teachers and trainee teachers will now include building understanding of the impact on pupils and staff of bias, discrimination, privilege and institutional racism.
The aim is to give teachers practical tools for teaching and communicating around racism, colonialism, global citizenship, interconnection, immigration and diversity. This is a long-term approach to dismantle racism in our education system.
What we'll do
We'll write to the government asking for:
- further financial support for schools to enable them to undertake more rigorous training, learning and development
- the introduction of mandatory training around the issues of race, prejudice and privilege
- an urgent reform of the curriculum, to ensure Black and Racially Minoritised history is embedded in our education system
