Our BSL charter pledges

As signatories of the British Deaf Association’s British Sign Language Charter, we pledge to:

  • consult formally and informally with the local Deaf community on a regular basis
  • ensure access for Deaf people to information and services
  • support Deaf children and families
  • ensure staff working with Deaf people can communicate effectively using British Sign Language
  • promote learning and high-quality teaching of British Sign Language

There's considerable work we need to continue and do more of to meet and deliver our BSL pledges.

Through our Deaf Services Liaison Forum (DSLF) we have started exploring a future audit of our progress so far, and feedback on continued development.

We're learning more about the BSL Act and upcoming developments, including continuing to identify the upskilling and learning requirements for Brighton & Hove City Council staff as part of our Accessible City Strategy and associated work.

This will likely involve identifying and commissioning BSL training, e-learning, and more. This is work we need to scope and then plan for both in terms of resources and capacity.
