Walking and Wheeling Week/Month for Early Years
What is Walking and Wheeling Week/Month?
Walking and Wheeling Week/Month is a city-wide celebration of walking and wheeling for families with young children, with a focus in particular on journeys to early years settings. It is usually run twice a year, with round 20-40 early years settings taking part each time. The settings encourage parents, carers, children and staff to walk, scoot and cycle to their nursery, pre-school, playgroup or childminders.
Around 2000 children and their families at 20 early settings across the city took part in our last Walking and Wheeling Week/Month in October 2019.
When is Walking and Wheeling Week/Month?
We usually run a 'Walking and Wheeling Week/Month' every May or June and October. We run the October Week/Month during 'International Walk to School Month', and the May/June Week/Month at the same time as national 'Walk to School Week' or other relevant campaigns.
We run the city-wide campaigns on these particular dates, but early years settings can have campaigns at any time since the promotional materials do not include specific dates. Please check this web page for updates on dates, or follow Early Years and Childcare in Brighton and Hove Facebook page where we will post updates.
How can we join in Walking and Wheeling Week/Month?
If you are parent or carer, with a child at a pre-school setting or childminder's, please ask your child's setting to take part. They can order free resources from us using the order forms which we will post on this page a couple of months before each campaign.
If you are an early years setting or childminder, and would like to join in or order free resources, please complete and return the order form which we will post on this page a couple of months before each campaign. If you would like to take part before the next campaign email us and we can arrange to send you free resources.
Here's our top tips on how to join in:
- If you drive, and don't live too far away, try walking to your early years setting at least once during the week.
- If you need to drive, then why not try 'Park & Stride'? This is when you park away from your early years setting, and walk the last 5-10 minutes.
- If you travel by bus, why not get off the bus a couple of stops early, and walk the last 5 minutes?
- If you walk or cycle to your early years setting, you could 'Park & Stride' for other journeys you would usually make by bus or car
