How to join the library

A women and girl read together at Mile Oak libraryYou can join at any one of our libraries you will need address details. If you're under 16 you'll need a parent or guardian's consent and address details.  

Join online

If you join online you'll receive a temporary membership number and PIN which will allow you to reserve books.

To use online services, collect your reservations and borrow items you'll need to come into a library with your temporary membership number and we'll give you a library membership card.

Joining Libraries Extra

Libraries Extra is now available at the following community libraries:

  • Coldean
  • Hangleton
  • Moulsecoomb
  • Patcham
  • Portslade
  • Rottingdean
  • Saltdean
  • Westdene
  • Whitehawk
  • Woodingdean 

To use Libraries Extra you need to apply in person at a library and provide two forms of ID, one with proof of address.

Lost library cards

To replace a lost or damaged card, please bring proof of your name and address to one of our libraries. There is a replacement charge

About library membership

Borrowing books is free!

Choose from adult and children’s fiction and non-fiction books and eBooks. You can also find LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) collections, rare books and special collections, music scores, local history books, essential skills collections, careers and job seekers reference resources. DVDs, CDs, audio books, language courses are available to hire for a small charge.

With a full adult membership you can borrow up to a maximum of 40 books plus eight audio-visual items (subject to age classification for young people). With a child membership, you can also borrow two toys from Whitehawk Library. You can return borrowed items to any Brighton & Hove library (with the exception of toys). You'll have access to all our free online resources and access to public computers.

We offer an exempt card to people with disabilities or mental health problems. Contact us for details.

Concession card available:

  • If you are disabled or cannot use standard print, or
  • If you’re on a designated benefit

Concessions on charges available:

  • If you hold a compass card.

Renewing items

All items can be renewed providing nobody else has reserved them up to a maximum of four renewals. If you renew chargeable items you will pay a further hire charge each time you renew.

You can renew in any of these ways

  • using My Library online
  • in person at any library, membership card number required
  • phone the library, membership card number required
  • automated 24 hour renewals on 0303 123 0035, membership card number and PIN required

Reserving items

You can reserve any item in person at a library or onlineThere is a small charge of £1 per item for making reservations (50p for children and free for Reading Well Books on Prescription). Your charge is payable when you reserve your item. We'll notify you when the item is in stock by email or post. To collect your reserved item, simply bring your library card and the reservation notification with you to the library.
