Borrowing and other libraries - SELMS, inter-library loans

If a book you want is unavailable from our libraries you can borrow from a library outside Brighton & Hove.

SELMS - South East Library Management System

We are part of a library consortium in the South East called SELMS. You can now use your library card to borrow from these partner libraries in person, or to reserve their books and talking books to be collected from any Brighton & Hove library at a cost of £3 per item. It is possible to search and reserve SELMS library stock using our online catalogue. You can also pay your library charges in any partner library.

Inter-library loans

If the book you want cannot be obtained from SELMS we may be able to get it through inter-library loans. We can search the British Library and various academic and public libraries. There is a charge of £7 per item for this service. Please call into a library or email us at libraries@brighton-hove.gov.uk. You will need to tell us

  • the author and title of the book you require
  • your library membership number.
