Holocaust Memorial Day
Holocaust Memorial Day is on the 27 January every year.
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2018 is 'The Power of Words'.
Holocaust Memorial Day provides the opportunity for everyone to learn the lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and in the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.
27 January 2018 will mark the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The Brighton & Hove Holocaust Education Project Group worked with two local schools to organise programmes on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 January 2018 featuring talks on the kinder transport; the Jewish Experience; the Sinti Roma experience; poetry writing and presentations of students’ artwork and poetry, and dance. The Mayor attended both events.
The University of Sussex held an event ‘The Power of Words’ on Wednesday 7 February. The event featured Philippe Sands, Professor of Law at University College London and barrister exploring A Personal History of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity; Susan Pollack, survivor of Auschwitz, Gubben slave labour camp and Bergen Belsen will speak about her experiences during the Holocaust; and the film: ‘Not Idly By: Peter Bergson, America and the Holocaust’.
