Training and development
We believe people are our greatest asset. We want our employees to thrive and grow and to feel valued and supported as they do so.
As a member of staff you will have annual performance and development reviews and regular supervision sessions with your manager to help keep you on track with your objectives and give you a chance to discuss your work-related training and development needs.
Our comprehensive range of in-house learning and development courses will equip you with both the technical and the soft skills you need to perform at your best. We also provide financial assistance to enable staff to study towards a professional qualification relevant to their job.

Staff diversity forums
We value individuality in our workforce and aim to make best use of every employee’s skills, talents, abilities and experience. We're committed to:
- tackling inequality in employment
- achieving a more diverse workforce that is representative of the communities we serve and
- developing an inclusive workplace culture where all employees feel valued and our rich diversity is celebrated by everyone
We support and encourage our employees to join our staff forums:
- Black & Minority Ethnic Workers' Forum
- Disabled Workers' & Carers' Network
- Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Workers' Forum
- Women's Network
The forums are self-organising groups designed to help employees network, share experiences and offer help, advice and support in a friendly and safe environment. The forums help the council to promote equality and diversity and play a key role in contributing to the review and development of policy, procedures and service delivery.
We encourage our managers to give their staff time off with pay to attend forum meetings and to participate in forum activities.
Employee assistance programme
We care about our staff and, as part of our employee wellbeing programme, we have a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week free helpline that staff can call to access information and advice on a wide range of personal and work-related topics.
Staff counselling service
Our staff have access to a free, confidential counselling service to discuss any personal or work-related issues.
Staff can self-refer and have the opportunity to talk to a trained counsellor to help them decide what support they need. This may include up to six face to face counselling sessions and/or information about other organisations that could provide specialist support.
Other health and wellbeing resources
We also provide a range of other resources to help our staff safeguard and enhance their health and wellbeing.
