How to complete the application form

The application form plays a very important part in the selection process. The information you give in the form is the only information we will use to decide if you should be shortlisted for an interview.

  • Click "Apply for job" when you are ready to start your application
  • Save your application regularly to avoid losing your work. You will be automatically logged out of the system after 30 minutes of inactivity

Complete all sections of the application form as clearly and fully as possible. The sections are:

  • Personal information
  • Statement of knowledge, skills and experience
  • Questionnaire 1 - references and declarations
  • Questionnaire 2 - diversity questionnaire.

How to complete the statement of knowledge, skills and experience section

This section is the most important as you are asked to show us how you meet the essential criteria set out in the person specification for the job. Completing this section fully will improve your chance of being shortlisted for an interviw.

  • Think carefully about how you meet each of the job requirements by considering what you have done in the past
  • If you have little or no work experience, think about the skills you developed at school, home, college, voluntary work or in a hobby, that you can transfer to the workplace
  • Provide practical examples of real life situations of when and how you used the particular knowledge, skill or experience

You can use the STAR model below to help structure your answers:

  • Situation - briefly set the context for the activity you are describing and make it relevant to the job you are applying for
  • Task - briefly describe what you had to do
  • Action - explain what you did, how and when you did it. Tell us about the processes you used, the reasons for the choices you made and the key things you did to deal with the situation
  • Result - tell us what the outcomes of your actions were and what difference they made

Below are examples of three different types of jobs along with the responses to the criteria on the person specification. If you do not write your answers in this way, you are unlikely to be shortlisted for an interview.

Top tips to help you complete this section:

  • Write a response against all of the criteria mentioned in the person specification
  • Use the criteria as headings to structure your answers
  • If there are several requirements listed under one point on the specification, make sure you show how you meet each one
  • If similar requirements appear more than once in the person specification, you need to show how you meet meet all of them - even if this means repeating information you have already provided
  • Type up and save your statement as a MS Word document and upload it as a PDF when it's completed
